Mustard oil has always been the soul of Indian kitchens—whether for preserving pickles, making bhajji-pakoras, or adding that unforgettable aroma to curries. Of late, adulteration concerns have ruled the market, putting consumer’s health as well as producer’s credibility at risk. The women farmers of Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal, have decided to change this story. Through a strategic alliance among four Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), a farmer-owned, farmer-run aggregation, processing and packaging enterprise has been set up. This ensured that the entire process, from selecting and sowing high quality mustard seeds to sealing bottles of oil, remains in their reliable hands and under their watchful eyes.
At the heart of this chain stands an all women Farmer Producer Company with over 500 shareholders, who lead the refining, filtering, and packaging with utmost dedication. Their commitment ensures that every drop of oil is pure, safe, and carries the pride of women’s hard work. The owners of Bhumisutaa are ensuring efficiencies across the value chain. Nothing is wasted in the oil production process—while the oil is carefully refined and filtered, the by- products, such as mustard cakes, are packaged as organic fertilizer by one of the alliance FPC, for use in natural farming.
